Northern Districts almost through to the main draw

Some great new ball bowling by Trent Boult and Tim Southee, who also share the new ball attack for the New Zealand national team, saw Northern Districts defeating Lahore Lions by as many as 72 runs and almost ensuring their qualification to the main draw of the Champions League T20 2014. The New Zealand based club now only has to avoid a heavy defeat in their third and last match against the Mumbai Indians.

Having successfully chased down the target in the first game, the Lahore Lions’ skipper Mohammad Hafeez went with the same strategy again and decided to field first after getting the fall of the coin in his favour. The Lahoris got both the opposition openers dismissed inside the power play, but, Daniel Flynn and BJ Watling, both of whom have played test matches for New Zealand, showed skills while facing the spin attack which included Hafeez as well and with a 90-run stand, guided the men in pink to a reasonable total.

171 still was chasable though as the boundaries were short particularly on one side. But, the Lahore openers had to see the new ball through. However, it wasn’t to be. Double strike by both Southee and Boult in the opening burst almost decided the fate of the game. A late fight by Nasim just made the defeat slightly less embarrassing for the Lahoris and nothing else.

Now, for the Lahore Lions to qualify for the main draw, they need to defeat Southern Express in the first game tomorrow and then, hope that the Northern Districts beat the Mumbai Indians. In case both Lahore and Mumbai win tomorrow, they both will have 4 points and then, the net run rate will come into picture. Currently, Mumbai’s net run rate is far better than that of Lahore.
