Mendy’s beauty sealed the first home game for Chennaiyin

There have been some beautiful goals scored in the first edition of the Indian Super League so far, but, none has been better than Bernard Mendy’s goal which he scored yesterday night at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium against Kerala Blasters. It was a back volley which left David James, the Kerala goalkeeper, as well as his whole defensive line standing beside him absolutely shell shocked.

The ball was coming towards the chest of Mendy and he had an opposition player on his right, a couple on his left and the goalie was also standing nearby. He had no chance to control that ball and then, take the shot. So, he jumped full length, got his back facing the ground and then, flicked the ball into the net, which was behind him, to get Chennayin FC leading by 2-1. It was something which no one, not even the Blasters’ fans, could help admiring. It was sheer brilliance by the former Hull City defender.

The Chennaiyin manager Marco Materazzi reckons not only in the Indian Super League, but, otherwise too, that strike was wonderful and its importance increased even more as it turned out to be the match winning blow for the Blues. Chennaiyin is now second in the ISL table behind Atletico De Kolkata which has 7 points and also has a healthy goal differential. However, the goal differential is not going to matter if Chennaiyin wins their next game. That would take them 2 points clear at the top.

It’s a long tournament though and the positions will keep changing in the table. But, the teams would want to get to the knockout stage as soon as possible as that would give them a chance to test their second choice players as well. All the teams have to play 14 matches.
